Why do I require insurance as a nurse?

Requirements by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) registration standard states that enrolled nurses, registered nurses and nurse practitioners who hold insurance cover in their own name need to retain evidence of their insurance and to provide it to NMBA on request.

According to the NMBA, Professional Indemnity insurance arrangements may be provided:

  • through your private or public sector employer
  • as part of membership of a professional body, trade union or defence organisation
  • through a contract of insurance obtained by you directly from an insurer or through an insurance broker, or
  • through a combination of the above.

The product extends to a diverse range of roles, including but not limited to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Nurses, Aged Care Nurses, Case Managers, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Practitioners, Community Health Nurses, School Nurses, Accredited Nurse Immunisers, Mental Health Nurses and students.

Doing cosmetic work on the side?

We have the option to add medical cosmetic injectables under your policy, with the flexibility to include and exclude PDO/Mono Threads depending on what services you provide. Just ask us how.

Employed Nurses

If you are employed, and you only work for an employer, your employer is likely to have PII arrangements that provide appropriate cover for your practice and the risks involved in your work.

*An employer's PII arrangements will only provide cover for activities you carry out as part of your duties during your employment. If you have undertaken any self-employed work prior to employment, you may need to maintain your own policy to cover for your previous work because this is likely not covered under your employer's policy.

Self-Employed Nurses

If you are self-employed, you will need to make sure that you have made your own PII arrangements.

If you carry out a combination of employed and self-employed roles, you will need to make sure that you have PII arrangements in place for your self-employed work, as this will not be covered by any PII arrangements put in place by your employer. You should always make sure you have PII arrangements in place which provide appropriate cover for all parts of your practice.
